Abstract
The present study was conducted on 12 dogs divided into two groups with six animals in each group. Group I comprised of six intact healthy male dogs brought for routine check up or vaccination and the dogs with history suggestive of prostatic affections were placed in group II. Dogs of group II were brought with a history of weakness, lethargy, stiff gait, anorexia, vomition, straining during defecation. Both the heart rate and respiration rates, in the dogs with prostatic disease, were significantly higher as compared to normal healthy intact male dogs. Per-rectal examination of dogs in group I revealed that the prostate gland was at pelvic brim and was of walnut size and solid in consistency. No pain was elicited on palpation in any of the normal healthy intact dog. Group II dogs were having prostate intra abdominal with soft consistency and poor sensitivity. Haemoglobin, TLC and PCV values were significantly lower in group I as compared to group II dogs. Total protein, albumin, BUN, serum creatinine and ALT varied significantly between the two groups. However, there was no significant difference in the values of ALP, bilirubin and AST between two groups. A significant positive correlation was identified between cranio-caudal length, ventro-dorsal depth and sacral promontory-pubic brim distance with body weight on radiography. On ultrasonographic examination, a significant positive correlation was identified between longitudinal length, transverse height, and prostatic weight with body weight in normal healthy intact dogs. Significant positive correlations were also found between transverse width and body weight. Similarly, a significant positive correlation was identified between longitudinal length, transverse height and prostatic weight with age. Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology revealed prostataitis, Benign prostatic hyperplasia and Adenocarcinoma. Treatment with oral finasteride administration and castration resulted in decrease in the size of prostate.
