Abstract
Sixteen clinical cases brought to the clinics with femur fracture were divided into four groups viz. A, B, C and D, with four animals in each group. Femur fractures were stabilized with intramedullary pinning alone, intramedullary pinning and autologous cancellous bone graft, intramedullary pinning and β-TCP and intramedullary pinning and β-TCP and autologous bone marrow aspirate composite in group A, B, C and D, respectively. The efficacy of fixation was studied on the basis of clinical evaluation, physiological, haemato-biochemical and radiographical parameters on day 0 and on 7th, 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th post-operative day. Haematological parameters viz. haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total leukocyte count and differential leukocyte count did not differ significantly within and between the groups. The biochemical parameters viz. serum calcium increased significantly (P<O.05) on 7th and 15th post-operative day. A significant reduction in serum alkaline phosphatase level observed on successive post-operative days. Radiographs of fractures treated with different techniques showed good reduction and fracture fixation, early signs of fracture healing in group B , C and D than group A. The size of callus fonnation was more in group C than group A, Band D. The day of pin removal. w as earlier in group B, C and D than in group A. Excellent weight bearing was noticed in group D. The overall fuhctional outcome in group B, C and D animals was better in comparison to group A animals.
